Bedford Orthopaedic Hospital, Umtata, South AfricaEXAMPLES OF CLINICAL CASES
Bilateral hip dislocation following a RTA
18 month old boy with Ricketts The Xhosa people are a very generous, warm-hearted and stoical nation. The hospital provides vital healthcare and has been recently joined by David Oloruntoba, a very experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon from Ghana. I spent five months at Bedford Hospital, prior to my registrar training in the UK. The team is fantastic and I was greatly inspired by the work that is undertaken there. I joined the 1 : 5 on call rota and learnt a great deal both surgically and also of the issues that confront any surgeon working in the developing world. There is a constant need for volunteer surgeons, both junior and at consultant level. Accommodation is available and there is always a very warm welcome. You will encounter an astonishing variety of cases and work with some truly inspirational people. The surrounding area is stunning, with the Drakensburg Mountains to the north and the Wild Coast to the south and is within easy reach for the weekend. Richard Gardner |
